Despite being born in Pontypool, Tuipulotu has captained England Under-18s and is expected to shine for England Under-20s in the upcoming junior version of the Six Nations.
The eligibility debate
Tuipulotu’s senior eligibility has raised eyebrows. Technically, the 19-year-old should qualify for Wales through his birthplace and Tonga via his family heritage. However, a crucial World Rugby amendment made last August may tip the scales in England’s favour.
The rule in question
The amendment clarified that the five-year residency period for eligibility doesn’t need to be continuous. This tweak aims to smooth out eligibility disputes in regions like the UK or the European Union, where borders are less rigid.
A case-by-case basis
World Rugby assesses each case individually, and the RFU has reportedly argued that Tuipulotu, who studied at Caldicott Prep and Harrow School, meets the five-year residency requirement. This interpretation would allow him to don the England jersey immediately, sidestepping a potential five-year wait after joining Bath’s academy last summer.
The “Kepu Rule” in the making?
Sources have suggested to The Telegraph that the RFU might have lobbied for this rule change with Tuipulotu in mind. If so, this landmark case could pave the way for future players and earn the nickname “The Kepu Rule.”
