Tom Ilube has announced his decision to step down as Chair of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), citing recent events as a distraction from the game. He confirmed that he will remain in the role until a successor is appointed to ensure a smooth transition.
Ilube has resigned from his position amid mounting scrutiny over executive pay within the RFU. Both Ilube’s and RFU CEO Bill Sweeney’s annual earnings have received significant criticism in recent weeks. Sir Bill Beaumont is reportedly amongst the front runners for the vacant role, with the former President of World Rugby possibly set for a return to Twickenham.
News outlets such as the Telegraph and Independent, have also been backing Beaumont for a comeback to HQ in what is expected to be an interim role.
Reflecting on his tenure, Ilube described his time as Chair as an ‘honour’ and reiterated his commitment to rugby. He looks forward to returning to the touchline as a supporter and enjoying the sport he grew up with while watching it continue to grow and thrive.

I’m pleased that an independent review of the LTIP scheme has been commissioned and look forward to its findings once completed. It has been an honour to Chair the RFU, and I look forward to once again enjoying the game that I grew up with from the touchline and watching it grow.”
