Former Fiji 7’s coach, Ben Ryan, expressed strong criticism regarding the officiating of the Fiji versus Wales game, characterizing it as a complete disgrace. Ryan believes that World Rugby owes Fiji an apology due to the perceived injustices during the match and asserts that some form of disciplinary action should be taken against the officiating team.
Ryan conveyed these concerns through his Twitter posts, singling out English referee Matthew Carley for his inconsistent decisions and attributing the officiating to Fiji’s defeat.
Adding to the discourse on this issue, Dan Leo, a former Samoa International and CEO of Pacific Welfare, has raised questions about the match official designated for Fiji’s upcoming game.
He tweeted: “Fiji’s next match vs AUS will be officiated by welshman Andrew Brace (listed as an Irish ref), a match whose outcome can fast track Wales into the QFs allowing Aus & Wales-Tier 1 Unions -to rest key players for their key Pool C match and remaining pool matches”
Leo continued: “After the controversy over refereeing of Wales v Fiji, it’s important for sanctity of the sport. Brace is listed as an IRFU referee -he moved there from Cardiff, his place of birth, when he was 22. He told https://ruck.co.uk in 2021 ‘my family are based in Wales in Cardiff'”
He later tweeted: “FIFA has policy of continental neutrality. If 2 different continental opponents face each other, officials will be from a 3rd, non-involved continental nation. If 2 of the same continental opponents meet, officials will be from the same continent, but obviously a different nation
“So for Wales v Fiji, Brace (from IRFU born and raised in Wales) could not be selected. Yes there would be a cost impact but it would also fastback top-level ref development outside Tier 1 Unions which is clearly not happening.
“Just to explain my post on Andrew Brace. The fact he has such a blended background is a great thing. Rugby like all walks of life thrives on diversity. But his selection to ref the Aus v Fiji match does put him in an invidious situation.”
