The Scotland international, capped eight times, hit a superb line off Ben Earl early in the game but was brought down by Quins defenders, resulting in a horrific injury.
Commentators and fans alike were left shaken by the sight. TNT commentator Alastair Eykyn described the moment: “I think this is going to be quite traumatic for a number of players who were around him at the time. The medics are swiftly onto the scene.”
Co-commentator Ben Kay added: “Because he got such a good line, the tackle was side-on, which meant the tackling player actually fell across his leg.”
Former England winger Ugo Monye and Kay could only react in disbelief, with Monye simply stating, “I’ve just seen it,” followed by Kay’s chilling remark: “Yeah, it’s horrific.”
