In a groundbreaking partnership, BKT Tires and the United Rugby Championship (URC) have launched the “Places to Play” initiative, aimed at fostering community growth through grassroots rugby in Ireland, Italy, and the UK. The inaugural project, the BKT Power Zone, was recently unveiled at Kenfig Hill RFC in South Wales – a move that promises to revolutionize both the club and its surrounding community.
Founded in 1897, Kenfig Hill RFC is more than just a rugby club. With 500 players across men’s, women’s, and junior teams, plus 1,200 social members, it’s a vital hub for the local area. The club’s ethos focuses on inclusivity and support, offering free junior memberships, mental health workshops, and charity initiatives. It’s this commitment that saw Kenfig Hill rise above over 30 other applicants in the “Places to Play” competition.
The judging panel, which included URC CEO Martin Anayi, BKT Europe Managing Director Lucia Salmaso, and former Ospreys player Ben John, was impressed by Kenfig Hill’s dedication. Anayi explained: “We asked for applications from clubs that really needed a helping hand to create something for the community, and Kenfig won the day. Rugby is about heartland communities. Nothing says that more than where we are in Wales today.”
What is the BKT Power Zone?
The BKT Power Zone, officially opened on November 27th, is a cutting-edge, all-weather training facility designed to serve not just rugby players but the entire community. Whether it’s local schools, fitness enthusiasts, or community groups, this space offers something for everyone.
Salmaso emphasized the broader vision behind the project: “We are incredibly proud to inaugurate this new sports area as part of our ongoing commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility. This new project underlines our willingness to invest in the well-being of our communities and creating opportunities for health, growth, and togetherness.”
Anayi echoed this sentiment: “It can be very wet down here. The club runs a number of teams, so they needed this facility. It will be a real point of difference, enabling them to train in any weather. It’s been great to see so many youngsters enjoying making use of it and having fun out there.”
A Grand Opening to Remember
The opening day was a celebration of community and sport. Ben John, better known as The Rugby Trainer, led a series of rugby and fitness sessions, engaging everyone from local schoolchildren to members of the Cartrefi Cymru Co-op, a non-profit supporting people with learning disabilities. Ospreys players also joined in, showcasing the Power Zone’s versatility.
John was enthusiastic about the impact: “It has been an absolute pleasure to be part of such an incredible activation from start to finish. Seeing so many clubs across the BKT URC doing amazing work within their communities has been truly inspiring. For BKT and URC to offer a life-changing opportunity by gifting an outdoor training facility to the winners is simply mind-blowing! Meeting the winners at Kenfig Hill RFC was such a memorable experience. They are an extraordinary community, and I’m incredibly proud to have been involved in this fantastic initiative.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured Salmaso, Anayi, and Kenfig Hill RFC Chairman Howard Phillips. Together, they celebrated the club’s achievement and its bright future.

Club Operations Manager Lee Houldcroft highlighted its potential: “The BKT Power Zone is a true game changer for our club. This facility will not only elevate our rugby training and performance but will also open up a world of opportunities for our non-rugby offerings. This versatile space will benefit our players, members, and the wider community, fostering a stronger, more connected community for everyone.”
For Anayi, the project is a testament to the URC’s commitment to grassroots rugby: “This project shows the commitment we as a league, alongside our clubs like Ospreys and our partners BKT, have to supporting the game at grassroots level and leaving a meaningful legacy.”
