Recent reports are that next season’s Premiership Rugby Cup competition, may be set to include teams from the RFU Championship. The change is as yet unconfirmed, however a newsletter from Championship club Coventry Rugby, has alluded to the new upcoming competition, which has fans excited to see the two divisions collide.
Within the newsletter, Coventry Rugby Executive Chairman Jon Sharp writes, “In addition to the league programme, there will be a cup competition with all Premiership and Championship clubs participating.” (top paragraph, right column).
Rugby Inside Line have also shared the news, in what will be an exciting competition involving the two leagues. The Premiership Rugby Cup is typically used as a way to introduce young stars into the first team environments, and could line-up some exciting contests against the Championship players. This would be a dream platform for the likes of Ealing Trailfinders to prove that they can hold their own with the Premiership sides, after suffering repeated set-backs on their first-division eligibility.
The 2023 Premiership Rugby Cup was won by Exeter Chiefs, after a dramatic final presented exactly what the competition is all about. The Chiefs’ late equalising try from Josh Iosefa-Scott took the fight against London Irish into extra time, before Aidon Davis’ match-winning try secured the trophy in the final moments.
London Irish had their hearts broken for a second year in a row, as the Exiles lost in extra-time to Worcester Warriors in the 2022 Final. Both of these matches also took place at the G-tech Community Stadium, handing a tough sense of ‘deja vu’ to the Irish fans. However, the Exiles have bounced back strong, could it be third time lucky for them in next years potentially ‘new and improved’ campaign?
