Statement: Sale Sharks have a new defence coach

Sale Sharks have brought in familiar face Byron McGuigan as their new defence coach, filling the gap left by Jamie Langley, who’s off to rugby league’s Leeds Rhinos.

McGuigan’s new role follows his stint on Alex Sanderson’s coaching staff last season, after hanging up his boots in 2023.

Seven Years of Shark

At 35, McGuigan knows the AJ Bell Stadium well. He spent seven years at Sale, playing over 100 games as a versatile wing or centre. The Scotland international also racked up 10 caps and crossed the whitewash three times for his country.

Early Coaching Wins

McGuigan has already made an impact from the sidelines, steering Sale to victory in their recent Premiership Rugby Cup clashes. During his playing days, he honed his coaching skills with local amateur clubs in the northwest, a move he now credits for discovering his coaching passion.

Leicester Tigers Showdown Looms

Ready to put his stamp on Sale’s defence, McGuigan’s first Premiership test comes on 1 December against Leicester Tigers. “My passion is defence,” McGuigan said on the club’s website. “We’ve introduced a few new systems over the last couple of weeks, and I’m eager to see them in action.”

Sharks DNA Is Back

For McGuigan, the goal is simple yet powerful: bring back the Sale Sharks’ signature physicality and togetherness. “The challenge is to make our defence effective, but our DNA—hard work and physicality—is non-negotiable,” he emphasized. Expect some hard-hitting action!
