There was some unexpected scenes down in Dubai, as Spain accidentally broke their newly won WXV3 trophy, in their post match celebrations. Spain had just triumphed 10-8 over Fiji in a tough fought battle, with the excitement of their first WXV title causing the Spaniards to be a little bit careless with their silverware.
In a video that was originally shared by WXV, and has since gone viral on social media, the Spanish players are shown in shock, after the trophy comes loose from the base it was previously mounted upon. The jubilant celebrations take a brief halt as the players look to mend their new trophy, with the silverware and base held together for the following team photos. Check out the video below:
After the initial shock, the players saw the funny side and celebrated with the trophy split in two pieces. Following their success in WXV3, Spain have qualified for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup, that will be hosted in England from the 22nd of August.
The Red Roses won the WXV1 title, and become the first ever nation to lift the trophy back-to-back. England were crowned inaugural champions of the tournament in New Zealand last year, and retained the crown on Sunday night in Canada, (early Monday morning UK time). WXV2 was won by Australia, as the Wallaroos defeated the defending champions Scotland in South Africa.
