Leicester Tigers scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet has reaffirmed his commitment to the club by signing a new contract, solidifying his place as a key figure at Welford Road.
The 23-year-old has been a cornerstone of the Tigers’ success in recent years, having joined the club’s development programmes during his school years. He progressed through the academy system and was an integral part of back-to-back U18 Academy League title-winning squads.
Van Poortvliet made his senior debut in the 2019/20 season and quickly became a fan favorite, playing a pivotal role in the Tigers’ Gallagher Premiership triumph in 2022. His performances earned him international recognition, with an England debut following in July of the same year.
To date, van Poortvliet has made 81 appearances for Leicester Tigers and recently added captaincy to his accolades, leading the team for the first time earlier this season against Bath Rugby.
Reflecting on his decision to stay, van Poortvliet shared his enthusiasm for the club:
“I’m really pleased to be staying at Tigers,” he said.
“This place means a lot to me. Coming through the Academy, the U18s, all you want to do is play and win for the club.
“The group of players we have, the tight bonds in the squad, all of that goes into the decision but it’s also the supporters, the feeling of playing for a club that matters a lot to people.
“It’s special and I’m very happy to know my future is here at Tigers.”
Leicester Tigers head coach Michael Cheika also expressed his delight at the scrum-half’s re-signing.
“Jack is a quality player and a quality person,” Cheika said.
“He’s come through our academy, so he’s grown up with Tigers in his rugby life.
“He knows what it means to play and win for Leicester. He is already at international level, and I believe there’s still lots of growth left in his game.”
Van Poortvliet’s decision to remain with Leicester underscores his commitment to the club and its ambitions, much to the delight of Tigers fans.
